Sparked by a fleet of spatial armatures developed by KBAS, SUPERNOVA was a FAISCAS production at the 2012 Circo Voador Festival of Digital Culture in Rio de Janeiro. For this collaborative explosion we engaged renowned Rio graffiti artist, Smael Vagner. A space of hyper-charged collaborative dynamics with no pre-set outcomes, SUPERNOVA culminated in an immersive environment overloaded with results from this intensively enriching experience for all involved – a pure invitation for spatial wonderment extended to the public. Work began as soon as we landed in Rio and unpacked our spatial goods. Over the course of four days approximately 10,000 festival attendees interacted with the live and rapid evolution of SUPERNOVA immediately adjacent to the nightly concert venue.
Other team-members invited into this mission included TACK Design (design, delivery and fabrication consultants), Tietz-Baccon (fabricators), AEROSOL Carioca (documentary films), Gambiarra (live digital processing), and PUC-RIO (architecture students in Rio). SUPERNOVA was generously supported by Studio-X.
